Honduras’ armed forces chief, Gen. Walter Lopez Reyes, announced that he will resign soon for personal reasons. Lopez is a strong supporter of the United States, although he sought a more independent role for his country. In a radio broadcast, he denied that the resignation was prompted by “internal or external pressures.” Lopez’s surprise announcement came three days after President Jose Azcona Hoyo took office in Honduras, which plays a key role in U.S. support for rebels fighting the Sandinista government of neighboring Nicaragua.
