McMartin Case: ‘Begging for Answers’

Reiner’s decision to drop all charges against five of the defendants in the McMartin case due to lack of evidence is a travesty of justice.

Clearly, evidence is not lacking in the minds of the judges and the grand jury who heard this case. In fact, in very rare instances of child sexual abuse cases will we ever have more evidence than exists here.

We have the word of children saying it happened to them supported by medical examinations and, in some instances, the eyewitness of other children. How can we ever hope for more?

The citizens of California are entitled to the best possible legal representation and equal protection under the law, as defendants are entitled to the best defense. I am not impressed with the ability of Reiner’s prosecution team to provide this. We need a prosecution team that can interview children and collaborate effectively with child development experts so we can earnestly pursue prosecution in an atmosphere that is humane and fair.
