Twenty-eight Calaveras County sheriff’s deputies who walked off their jobs Jan. 26 in a contract dispute returned to work after a tentative salary agreement was reached, representatives for both sides said. The Deputy Sheriffs’ Assn. and county supervisors are expected to ratify the new salary package today, county administrative coordinator John Crane said. Details of the pact will not be released until then, he said. Deputies had asked for a 6% salary hike and a 5% increase in the county’s contribution to their retirement plan. The county had offered a 4% pay increase and a 4.75% boost in retirement. “I’m very glad it’s over,” said Sgt. Randy Grasmuck, a candidate to replace Sheriff Claud C. Ballard, who is not seeking reelection. During the strike, a seven-member team of county management employees, including Ballard, patrolled the largely rural county and reported no appreciable increase in crime.
