Eastland in Critical Condition

GREENWOOD, Miss. — Former Sen. James Eastland, a gruff Southerner who fought communists, liberals and civil rights with equal vigor during his 36 years in Congress, was in critical condition today in a hospital near his Mississippi delta farm.
The silver-haired, 81-year-old Democrat and symbol of conservatism was suffering from “multiple medical problems,” said Liz Hare, an official at Greenwood-LeFlore County Hospital.
