National Book Critics Circle Honors Authors Tyler, Lukas

NEW YORK — Anne Tyler has won the National Book Critics Circle’s fiction award for her novel, “Accidental Tourist,” and J. Anthony Lukas has won the award for general nonfiction for his study of court-ordered busing in Boston.
Lukas’ “Common Ground,” which also won an American Book Award, recounts the experiences of three families in the turmoil surrounding a federal judge’s order to desegregate Boston schools.
Leon Edel won the award for biography and autobiography for his “Henry James: A Life.”
“Habitations of the Word,” by William Gass, won the criticism category, and Louise Gluck’s “Triumph of Achilles” won the poetry award.
The awards by the circle, an organization of newspaper book reviewers and editors, will be presented at New York University on March 6.
