University of San Diego baseball Coach J.C. Cunningham claimed his 500th career victory Saturday as the Torreros won the second half of a doubleheader against UC Riverside, 9-5. USD lost the opener, 7-6.
For a while it appeared Cunningham would reach the milestone in the opener since USD led, 4-2, going into the sixth inning of the seventh-inning first game.
However, Torrero starter Dan Newman was pulled after loading the bases in the seventh. Reliever Steve Mehok hit the first batter he faced and gave up a double to shortstop Johnny DeForge that gave UC Riverside a lead it never relinquished.
USD jumped to a 5-0 lead by the third inning of the second game, getting two runs on a home run by Sean Baron, who had four RBIs. Torrero center fielder Dave Jacobs added four hits and scored runs in the doubleheader.
