Poor Math Performances

U.S. Education Secretary William J. Bennett has just kicked our secondary school students in the face by blaming their poor performance in mathematics on their failure to pursue a rigorous study of math in middle and upper grades.

Bennett should instead demand the formation of a blue-ribbon commission to investigate why our students are still studying arithmetic computation in the eighth grade when students in other advanced countries have already progressed into advanced math courses.

The cause of this disaster is that our students have not learned basic computational skills when they were in the elementary grades.
