Cal State Northridge gymnast Monica Mayes finished fifth in the all-around Saturday night at the NCAA Division II West Regional championships. Mayes’ teammate Stacy Baker did not place. Paige Allen, a former Calabasas High standout competing for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, won the uneven parallel bars in the meet at Cal Poly SLO.
Dave Gross, who coached Rosamond High to records of 6-3 and 7-3 the past two seasons, has been named football coach at Saugus. Gross, 36, also has been an assistant at Palmdale and Quartz Hill.
Infielder Jim Anderson, formerly of Granada Hills High, was sent to the Montreal Expos minor league complex for reassignment. Anderson, 29, broke into the major leagues with the Angels in 1978. He has also played with Seattle and Texas.
The Canoga Park High cheerleading squad took second place in the L.A. Games Annual Cheerleading and Drill Team competition last Saturday at Knott’s Berry Farm. Canoga Park’s freshman and sophomore team captured third place.
