American Lynn Jennings edged Britain’s Zola Budd in the women’s race, and Italy’s Olympic 10,000-meter champion Alberto Cova raced to victory in the men’s event at the 54th Five Mills cross-country race at San Vittore Olona, Italy.
Jennings took the lead from Budd several hundred yards from the finish of the 2.48-mile race to win in 17 minutes 27 seconds--three seconds ahead of Budd.
Cova, the first Italian to win his country’s most prestigious cross-country event in 22 years, finished in 30 minutes 48 seconds.
