A sheriff’s plainclothes deputy was wounded in the back by a shotgun blast as he tried to serve a misdemeanor warrant at an apartment house in the 2500 block of East 2nd Street, in Long Beach. The deputy was taken to St. Mary Medical Center, where he was reported in good condition. A Long Beach SWAT team sealed off the area around the apartment house for four hours and finally rushed the doorway and windows after firing tear gas grenades. A man suspected of having fired at the deputy was found inside, dead of gunshot wounds. Other details were not immediately available.
