The Los Angeles Building and Safety Commission unanimously voted to deny a federal government contractor more time to bring a Hollywood motel being used as a holding center for suspected illegal aliens into compliance with zoning laws. The city will now move to close the controversial DeLongpre Avenue facility, which is operated in a residential area by Behavioral Systems Southwest for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Los Angeles City Councilman Michael Woo, who represents the area, called the facility a “detention center” and said it is “not fair to the community and not good planning practice.” A Behavioral Systems’ attorney said his client is complying with the law and will explore “other legal avenues” to keep the center open.
