Beverly Enterprises reported that its first-quarter net income plunged 31% from a year earlier due to a $7.8-million extraordinary charge in the latest quarter. Excluding the charge, which resulted from the redemption of $77 million of subordinated debentures, the company said its profit would have been up 25% from the same 1985 quarter.
