California Democrats are thinking again about a proposal to hold the state’s 1988 presidential primary a month or two earlier than June in order to give California more clout in picking presidential nominees. In any event, state Democratic Party Chairwoman Betty Smith said, she means to eliminate the confusion of having Democrats vote directly for long lists of individual national convention delegates pledged to the various presidential candidates. She told a Sacramento news conference that legislation will be introduced next year to make the change.
