Hermosa Beach : Brett’s, Neighbors at Peace

The City Council decided to step back from a longstanding dispute between the operator of C. J. Brett’s on Pacific Coast Highway and some area residents over noise from the restaurant.
At the request of operator John Altamun and several residents, the council voted Tuesday to reverse a Planning Commission decision that required Brett’s to close at 10 p.m. until a sound barrier is built between the restaurant and two adjacent homes. Brett’s normally stays open until 2 a.m.
Altamun told the council that he and the neighbors have agreed to build a wall on the residents’ property as soon as they can find a contractor. Brett’s would pay for 60% of the cost, the neighbors 40%, Altamun said.
The Planning Commission had recommended that the hours be cut until the wall is built, but the council decided that is not necessary as long as the operators and residents are working together to solve the problem.
“As far as I am concerned, we don’t have a problem anymore,” said Councilman John Cioffi.
