Winds Hamper Fighting of Carolina Wildfires

HOLLY RIDGE, N.C. — Firefighters hampered by shifting winds and crackling-dry timber fought to contain North Carolina’s worst wildfires of the season Wednesday. The largest fire, a 16,000-acre blaze near Holly Ridge, continued to rage but had shifted from a residential area to a more rural region.
Gil Green of the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources said no homes were immediately threatened. Twenty Holly Ridge homes were evacuated Tuesday before the fire shifted direction.
