BRIEFLY : Stewart Inducted Into Hall of Fame

Walter Van V. Stewart, aquatics coach for 35 years at Harvard High, has been inducted into the Southern Section’s Hall of Fame.
Stewart’s swimming teams won Prep League championships in 1952, 1954 and 1955. The Saracens were then moved to the Olympic League and won titles there 11 times in 12 years. Stewart also guided his team to championships in the Southern California Swim League in 1973 and the Pioneer League in 1974. Harvard won a Southern Section Class-B title in 1954 and a 4-A Division freshman/sophomore championship in 1976.
Stewart, Harvard’s athletic director, has also coached 11 high school water polo All-Americans. Harvard won Pioneer League water polo championships under Stewart in 1973, 1980 and 1982.
Stanford Hires Scott Chisam of Alemany
Scott Chisam, assistant track and field coach at Alemany High, has accepted a position as an assistant track coach at Stanford next season. Chisam tutored the sprinters and jumpers for Alemany this spring after spending nine years as women’s coach at UCLA. The Alemany girls team won the Del Rey League championship this season. The boys team placed second.
Pierce Wins Volleyball Title
Pierce College won its first Southern California volleyball championship last Friday, defeating Golden West, 15-9, 15-11, 13-15, 16-14, at Pierce.
The Brahmas won the South Coast Conference with a 14-0 record and finished the season 24-1 overall and a 23-game win streak.
Oporski Favored in Triple Jump at Finals
Stan Oporski of Cal State Los Angeles will be one of the leading contenders in the triple jump at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. track and field championships that begin Friday at Cal Poly Pomona. Oporski, a transfer from Moorpark College, set a CSLA record in the long jump last month with a leap of 53-9 at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational. The jump was the third best in CCAA history.
Cycling Races Begin in Santa Clarita Valley
The Tour of Santa Clarita, a three-day series of bicycle races, begins Friday at 3 p.m. with a 2.5-mile race at the Castaic Lake Hillcline.
Cyclists will be attempting to qualify for the Junior World Trials by finishing in the top three in the series.
