Seventeen Magazine Tournament of Champions : Top-Seeded Graham Makes Quarterfinals With Second-Round Victory Over Berger

Top-seeded Debbie Graham of Fountain Valley defeated Andrea Berger of Plantation, Fla., 6-2, 6-0, Thursday in the second round of the 16-and-under division of the Seventeen Magazine Tennis Tournament of Champions at Mission Viejo’s Marguerite Recreation Center.
Graham will meet Tonya Fuller of Stockton in today’s quarterfinals, which begin at 9 a.m. The semifinals will start at 2 p.m., and the winners advance to Saturday’s finals at 10 a.m.
In the 18-and-under division, No. 1 seed Stephanie London of Rolling Hills defeated unseeded Ginger Helgeson of Edina, Minn., 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. London will face unseeded Kristin Hill of Palatine, Ill. in today’s quarterfinals.
The tournament’s other top seed, Meredith Geiger, of Edmond, Okla., advanced to the quarterfinals of 14-and-under division with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Ellie Stark of Phoenix. Geiger will play Kimberly Po of Rolling Hills today.
Mission Viejo’s Kimberly Chang lost to Upland’s Laxmi Poruri, 6-4, 6-2, in the 14-and-under division.
In first-round consolation matches, Dorey Brandt of Brea defeated Clara Arnold of Jackson, Miss., 6-3, 6-1, in the 18-and-under division. In the 16-and-under division, Julie Willett of Irvine won by default over Wendy Stross, of Ann Arbor, Mich. Stross couldn’t play because of illness.
