Veteran Manager Dick Williams, 57, was officially named to succeed Chuck Cottier as manager of the slumping Seattle Mariners.
“It’s possible I may be over-demanding for some players,” Williams said during a news conference. “But I’m not hired to be a nice guy. I’m hired to win baseball games. There’s no reason you have to make excuses for a ballplayer.
“But I’m going to try to be nicer here. My wife says, ‘Be nice, be nice.’ ”
