Salute to City’s Oldest School: The city’s oldest school will celebrate the 50th anniversary at its present site Saturday, complete with a carnival, prizes and a barbecue sponsored by the PTA. Newport Beach Grammar School first opened in 1894 as a small, one-room wooden cottage near the Newport Pier that was destroyed by the 1933 earthquake. Saturday’s celebration marks the 50th year of the school since it was rebuilt at 14th Street and Balboa Boulevard. Former students, teachers and parents, as well as the public, are invited to the celebration at the school. A general meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in the auditorium and will be followed by an open house. School memorabilia and tours will be conducted by current students before the carnival begins at noon.
