Supporters of demoted Afghan leader Babrak Karmal have held at least eight protests in Kabul, most of them student demonstrations broken up by secret police, Western diplomats said in Pakistan. Despite the protests, the Afghans’ new Communist leader, identified only as Najibullah, has been featured with Karmal in Afghan state media in an apparent attempt to present an image of unity. Karmal remains head of the Revolutionary Council.
