Reagan Intervenes in Rail Strike

President Reagan today ordered the creation of an emergency mediation board to intervene in the 75-day strike by track maintenance workers against the Maine Central Railroad.
The President’s action came as strikers from the Maine Central and two sister railroads also owned by Guilford Transportation Industries Inc. picketed Conrail freight facilities in six states and the District of Columbia, disrupting service as train crews refused to cross the lines.
