Race Driver De Angelis Dies a Day After Crash

Formula One driver Elio de Angelis of Italy died Thursday of the injuries he suffered the previous day when his Brabham-BMW race car overturned and caught fire during a test run at the Paul-Ricard circuit in Le Castellet, France.
De Angelis, 28, suffered head injuries and dislocation of his spinal column when the car left the S-shaped track at an estimated 160 m.p.h.
De Angelis had appeared in 108 Grand Prix races, winning two. He joined the circuit in 1979 and was a member of the Lotus team for six years before joining Brabham this year.
