State Community College Tennis : Grossmont Beats Foothill, 6-3, to Cap an Undefeated Season

The Grossmont Community College men’s tennis team won the state title Thursday, defeating defending champion Foothill Community College, 6-3, in the finals at the Cabrillo Racquet Club in Cabrillo.
Grossmont clinched the match when the No. 3 doubles team of Jim Alt and Jim Filla defeated Bobby Fenton and Randy Bilsey, 6-4, 6-2.
In singles, Grossmont’s Sean Wade defeated Craig Corfield, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, Chris Henderson beat Brian Cory, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3, and No. 4 player Derek McMahon beat Scott Margot, 7-5, 6-2.
Grossmont was the southern champion and Foothill was the northern champion. It is only the second time in 15 years a southern team has won the state title.
It is the first state title for Griffins’ Coach Bob Rump, who is retiring. The Griffins finished the season undefeated.
