Surplus VA Land Feels Zoning Squeeze

The Los Angeles City Council Friday took steps to severely limit development of 46 acres of surplus federal property at the Sepulveda Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Councilman Hal Bernson, whose district includes the VA property, said he requested the action “to protect the character of a well-established residential neighborhood” from private development.
The Reagan Administration has proposed selling part of the property, which has been used for golf course and Little League fields, to help reduce the federal budget deficit.
Bernson’s motion, approved unanimously and without discussion, instructs city planners to roll back the zoning on the property to the most restrictive residential use--a maximum permitted density of one home an acre. The property is now zoned for government use.
Bernson acknowledged that the council action is going to make the property “less desirable” to a private buyer.
