Templeton 13, Simi Lutheran 0--Chris James and Mike Hall combined for a three-hitter as Templeton advanced in the Small Schools Division. James struck out 10 in five innings and Hall fanned three in two innings. Steve Finlayson went 3 for 4 with a home run and a triple.
Providence 12, Rio Hondo Prep 0--Jeff Cirillo and Kevin Miller combined for a one-hitter and Providence backed them with 17 hits. Providence is ranked No. 1 in the Small Schools Division.
Tony Ross had a home run, a triple, and drove in three runs for Providence.
Pasadena Poly 16, Oakwood 6--Despite allowing 18 hits, Oakwood’s Marc Williams (6-1) pitched a complete game.
St. Bernard 11, Chaminade 3--Tim Williams went 4 for 5 with three doubles to help St. Bernard advance in the 1-A Division. Dan Cossettini went 3 for 3 and scored three runs and Ron Scoto and went 4 for 4 with two runs scored for St. Bernard. Chaminade ended the season with a 15-7 record.
Saugus 9, La Mirada 0--Kent Gustaveson and Chris Joy belted homers for Saugus in the 2-A Division game. Joy went 3 for 3, as did Don Pedersen, who also hit a solo homer in the fourth inning. La Mirada’s only hit of the game was a single by Kelly Brooks in the first inning.
Gladstone 13, St. Genevieve 0--David Avila went 4 for 5 and drove in three runs for Gladstone in the 2-A Division game. Carlos Alvarez tossed six scoreless innings for Gladstone, striking out seven. St. Genevieve ended the season with a 12-8 record.
Canyon (Anaheim) 20, Harvard 0--Canyon pitchers Mike Townley and Scott Houck combined to pitch a one-hitter, while Canyon batters racked up 19 hits in the 3-A Division game. Harvard committed seven errors.
High School Softball Playoffs, First Round
Chaminade 4, El Monte 3--Suzette Honore improved her record to 4-1 by striking out five and allowing one earned run as unranked Chaminade upset the defending 2-A Division champions. Jenny Brown went 2 for 3 and drove in a run for Chaminade.
Alemany 3, St. Bernard 0--Janeen Duncan pitched her seventh shutout of the season to lead Alemany in the 2-A Division game. Duncan, a junior, improved her record to 15-2 by allowing only three hits, while striking out eight. Robin Long of Alemany was 2 for 3 with a triple and a RBI.
High School Tennis
Canyon 10, Apple Valley 8--Canyon advanced to the quarterfinals of the Southern Section 2-A playoffs with a win at Apple Valley.
Mark Vukanovich won two of three singles’ sets for Canyons, as did teammate Chris Mortimer. Canyon’s doubles teams of Dale Santos-Nick Wolff and Troy Doyle-Pontus Henningsohn also won two of three doubles sets.
