That roughly equals the company’s stated goal of trimming its work force when it offered early retirement or “special separation” deals to about 40,500 employees in April. Exxon had hoped that about 15%, or 6,075, would accept by the May 30 deadline. But some analysts expect further retrenchments, and the company said it is now deciding “how many involuntary separations may be required.” The program covers mainly U.S.-based employees. The oil giant employs 146,000 worldwide.
