Nevada Gov. Richard Bryan blocked the shipment of about 40,000 gallons of cyanide solution from the defunct Western States Refining plant in Fontana to the Osage Industries mining operation near Las Vegas. Bryan, along with other Nevada state and local officials, asked the federal Environmental Protection Agency to halt the scheduled move to a mill in Sandy Valley after citizens there objected. Osage Industries was planning to recycle the solution for use in the extraction of gold and silver from ore.
