Long Beach : Fireworks May Be Canceled

The city’s annual off-shore Fourth of July fireworks show may be canceled because the Tidelands Agency, which usually arranges it, cannot find a contractor with enough liability insurance, City Manager John Dever told the city council Tuesday. The city requires $1 million in liability insurance, Dever said. The maximum amount any prospective providers have offered is $500,000, he said.
Dever recommended that the city not reduce the insurance requirement.
Council members urged Dever to find an insurance provider or arrange to give city fireworks funds to Wrather Port Properties for their annual fireworks display over the Queen Mary.
In keeping with local tradition, Long Beach Fire Department also expects to sponsor a fireworks display at Veteran’s Stadium, a department spokeswoman said.
