Jim Toomey, athletic and activity director at Laguna Beach High School, has been relieved of his position and reassigned to Top of the World Elementary School by Laguna Beach Unified School District’s new superintendent, Dr. Dennis Smith.
“We’re reorganizing the entire high school structure,” Smith said. “There will an assistant principal’s position opening, and I told Jim he could apply for that position. For now, he’s been assigned to Top of the World, where he’s taught before.”
Toomey also served as Laguna Beach’s golf coach. This year, he became athletic director after Walt Hamera resigned last February to become effective at the end of the school year. Hamera reportedly disagreed with school district board members over the administration of the school’s sports programs.
Toomey inherited a sports department in which 11 full-time coaches had resigned at the end of the 1984-85 school year. This year, 32 of the school’s 43 teams were handled by walk-on coaches, or non-faculty instructors.
