Paraplegic Killed When Van Jumps Curb, Hits Pole

A paraplegic driver was fatally injured Tuesday when his specially equipped van jumped a curb and hit a cement light pole, Huntington Beach police said.
Lee Douglas Thon, 50, of Fountain Valley was southbound on Springdale Street about 1:40 p.m., when the van left the road north of Machine Drive, said Lt. Ed McErlain. Thon was airlifted by medical helicopter to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where he died shortly after 3 p.m., McErlain said.
The single-car accident is under investigation.
