The military government of Suriname expelled the secretary of the Dutch Embassy, Erik W.P. Klip, for “improper interference in local affairs.” Klip was given a week to leave the former Dutch colony in South America. No other details were given. However, relations between the two nations have been strained since December, 1982, when 15 opponents of the government of Commander-in-Chief Desi Bouterse were murdered. Immediately after the slayings, the Netherlands suspended a $1.5-billion aid program to Suriname.
