Edward I. Masterman, Austria’s honorary consul general in Boston for 18 years, resigned Tuesday to protest the “disaster” of Kurt Waldheim’s installment as president of Austria.

“I did resign, effective today (Tuesday). I delivered my resignation to Ambassador Thomas Klestil in Washington,” Masterman, a lawyer named to the post in 1967, said. “I told him my course of action could not be otherwise because of the election of Mr. Waldheim as president,” he said.
