Ed Whitson, who was signed as a free agent by the New York Yankeees in December 1984, was traded back to the San Diego Padres for relief pitcher Tim Stoddard.
Whitson, who won 15 games for the Padres during their National League championship season of 1984, never felt comfortable in New York and failed to live up to the five-year, $4.4-million dollar contract he signed.
The 31-year-old right-hander had a 5-2 record with 7.54 earned-run average in 14 games with the Yankees this season. He went 10-8 with 5.88 ERA last season and was constantly the target of abuse by Yankee fans.
In another trade, the Padres acquired left-handed pitcher Dave LaPoint from the Detroit Tigers for left-handed pitcher Mark Thurmond.
