TIME OUT FOR ‘ELLIS’

I would hope, in the name of fair play, that Calendar will devote some more space to the play that is obviously an audience favorite--”A Day Out of Time--Ellis Island, 1906” at the Colony-Studio Theatre.

“Green Card” is a “think piece,” not an entertainment--and most definitely not for everyone, believe me. Having seen both, I can safely say that people take The Colony play to their hearts and would, in general, like to bury the one at the Taper.

“A Day Out of Time” is a much more satisfying play. It’s touching (“Green Card” alienates its audience), with a great deal of humor, identifiable heroes and hissable villains. It doesn’t harangue, confuse and bore the audience--it entertains , and that is why most everyone goes to the theater.

I am not a professional theater critic. I pay for my tickets. And when I leave a theater feeling cheated, I leave angry. If I want befuddled rantings and ravings, I’d visit Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park on a Sunday afternoon.
