William D. Sachau; Ex-DWP Official, Mayor, Councilman in Hermosa Beach

William D. (Bill) Sachau, chief financial officer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for many years and a former mayor and councilman in Hermosa Beach, died Tuesday of cancer.
Sachau, who also was chief deputy controller of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1966, was 62 and died in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
An orphan who was raised in a Masonic home in Covina, Sachau was a bombardier in World War II and later graduated from UCLA with a degree in business administration.
He served on the Hermosa Beach City Council from 1954 to 1958 and was mayor from 1956 to 1958.
After leaving the DWP in 1980, he was an investment banker and first vice president for E. F. Hutton & Co.
Survivors include his wife, Grace, two sons, a sister and three grandchildren. Contributions are asked to the Oncology Unit of Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, where Sachau was a financial adviser.
