American League Roundup : White Sox Run Themselves Out of Chances and Into 5-4 Loss to Yankees

From Times Wire Services

A combination of some odd base-running by the Chicago White Sox and a fine throw by Dave Winfield earned the New York Yankees a 5-4 victory Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.

Winfield threw out pinch-runner Wayne Tolleson at the plate in a game-ending double play to make a winner of Dennis Rasmussen (11-2).

The White Sox scored a run in the ninth to cut the lead to one run when John Cangelosi came to bat with Carlton Fisk at first base and Tolleson at third.

Cangelosi hit a fly ball to medium right field, and Winfield caught it for the second out of the inning. Winfield’s throw to home got to catcher Ron Hassey on one hop, Hassey blocked the plate, and Tolleson was out.

Both White Sox Manager Jim Fregosi and third base coach Doug Rader said Tolleson was told not to try to tag up. In fact, Fregosi said Bobby Bonilla, who was thrown out at home earlier in the inning trying to score on a ground ball back to the mound, also was instructed not to run.

“I told him (Tolleson) to stop,” Rader said. “I put my hand up. I held him up. . . . Evidently, I didn’t do a good job.”

Tolleson, however, said he had been instructed to run.

“He (Rader) told me to tag. You do what you’re told in that situation,” Tolleson said. “He was calling for me to tag all the way.”

In any case, Fregosi was angered by the White Sox’s baserunning.

“I don’t know where the hell he (Tolleson) was going. In fact, I don’t know where Bonilla was going either,” Fregosi said. “That’s stupid baseball--awful baserunning.”

Baltimore 6, Minnesota 2--Coming out of an 8-for-39 slump, Lee Lacy hit a home run and drove in three runs, and John Shelby and Cal Ripken also homered as the Orioles defeated the Twins at Baltimore.

Lacy led off the fourth inning with his seventh homer and delivered a two-run single in the eighth, knocking out Frank Viola (9-8).

Ken Dixon (9-7) needed relief help from Don Aase after Kirby Puckett hit his 17th homer to lead off the eighth. Dixon gave up four hits before Aase pitched hitless relief for his 24th save.

Following the game, the Orioles placed All-Star first baseman Eddie Murray on the 21-day disabled list, retroactive to July 10. The 30-year-old first baseman injured his left hamstring two weeks ago.

Detroit 2, Texas 1--Larry Herndon doubled home the tying run and scored when Kirk Gibson drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the ninth inning as the Tigers edged the Rangers at Detroit.

Walt Terrell (8-8) pitched a six-hitter for the victory. He struck out seven and walked one.

Kansas City 5, Cleveland 1--Frank White, whose home run helped the American League win the All-Star game, hit another solo homer to help Bret Saberhagen and the Royals beat the Indians at Kansas City.

Saberhagen (5-10) gave up five hits in eight innings. He struck out six and walked none, retiring 11 straight Indians until Joe Carter hit his 16th home run in the seventh.

Seattle 5, Boston 1--Jim Presley hit a grand slam with two out in the 11th inning to lift the Mariners over the Red Sox at Seattle.

Pete Ladd (5-2) worked the 11th for the victory. Bob Stanley (5-3) gave up Presley’s grand slam.
