BASEBALL MISCELLANY

Numbers:

--Wayne Tolleson, acquired by the New York Yankees last Tuesday from the Chicago White Sox, became the Yankees’ sixth shortstop this season.

--Joel Skinner, the catcher obtained by the Yankees in the same deal, replaces Ron Hassey and Butch Wynegar, who threw out only 12 runners in 72 stolen-base attempts.

--On their 3-10 trip that jeopardized their lead in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox batted .212 as a team. In games not pitched by Roger Clemens, they hit .102 with runners in scoring position. Wade Boggs hit .229 on the trip and endured an 0-for-16 slump, longest of his career.

--The Red Sox, despite a lineup that includes Boggs, Jim Rice, Don Baylor and Dwight Evans, have scored three runs or fewer in 43 of their first 102 games.

--The Pittsburgh Pirates have been outscored in the first inning this season, 54-19. They scored in the first only three times in July.

--The Chicago Cubs and the Houston Astros are the only teams in the National League with three players who have 100 or more hits this season: Ryne Sandberg, Keith Moreland and Shawon Dunston on the Cubs; Kevin Bass, Glenn Davis and Bill Doran on the Astros.

--Of the 24 players on the White Sox roster when the season started, eight are no longer there.

--The New York Mets, who have been leading the National League East all season, are on a 110-win pace. The second-place Montreal Expos are on an 82-win pace. The resultant 28-game difference would be the biggest in big-league history, surpassing the 27 1/2-game advantage the 1903 Pirates had over the Brooklyn Dodgers.

--An average of 1.59 home runs per game were hit in Dodger Stadium last season. This season, the average is 1.13, just above Busch Stadium in St. Louis, where it is 1.12, lowest in the big leagues.

--Baltimore reliever Don Aase, who took himself out of a game last Wednesday because of pain in his elbow, is on a pace to appear in 73 games for the Orioles this season. Aase, who appeared in 54 games last season, had never appeared in more than 40 before joining the Orioles.
