A bank robber lost most of the money he had stolen in a confrontation with a 68-year-old security guard Monday morning.
A man who pretended to have a gun was given $1,000 by a teller at the Security Pacific Bank at 5341 El Cajon Blvd. at 10:10 Monday morning. But when he tried to make a getaway, the man, whose name has not been released by police, was confronted by Charles N. Williams, a security guard at the bank.
“Apparently, the robber said, ‘I’ve got a gun,’ and Williams replied, ‘I’ve got a knife,’ ” police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Williams chased the robber to his car, they scuffled, and Williams cut the man’s right wrist with his penknife.
The robber drove his car into a dead-end alley and abandoned it less than a block from the bank, fleeing on foot. Two-thirds of the money he received had been thrown into the bushes during the fight and was recovered by police.
Robinson said police believe they know the identity of the robber and that an arrest should follow sometime this week.
