Tiffany Cohen, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 800-meter freestyle, won her second national title in the event with a narrow victory over Goodwill Games champion Leslie Daland at the Phillips 66 U.S. Swimming Championships at Santa Clara, Calif.
Cohen’s time of 8 minutes 36.72 seconds was her best since she won in the Olympics in 8:24.95. Daland was timed in 8:36.80.
Gary Brinkman, a South African who attends Southern Illinois University, won the men’s 800 in 8:02.08, with American record-holder John Mykkanen second in 8:03.10.
