Crenshaw Flips Golf Club Into Air, and It Lands Him in Toledo Hospital

TOLEDO, Ohio — Ben Crenshaw showed some unorthodox form near the end of Saturday’s third round of the PGA National Championship and paid for it with a trip to the hospital.
After his iron shot to the 354-yard, par-4 18th hole almost fell into the cup, Crenshaw flipped his club into the air. It hit him on the back of the head.
“He just tossed the club up, and it hit him on the head,” playing partner Dan Pooley said. “He wasn’t cut bad, but it bled quite a lot.”
Crenshaw went on to tap in the short putt for a closing par, finishing a round of one-over-par 72 that gave him a 217 total.
He was then taken to Toledo Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Reached in the hospital’s waiting room, Crenshaw’s wife, Julie, said: “He’s fine. He just needs a couple of stitches.”
