‘Judgment Day for Helms’

Your editorial (Aug. 10), “Judgment Day for Helms,” hit it right on the head. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) is an embarrassment to our nation as well as a disgrace to the U.S. Senate. His undying support for bloodthirsty right-wing dictatorships reveals more about his true character and beliefs than any of his phony populist rhetoric.

Sympathy toward fascism and repression is apparently in Helms’ blood. Democracy and freedom seem to be alien ideals that merely serve to further his extremist agenda.

I only hope that in 1990, the good people of North Carolina have the sense to elect a real statesman to the Senate, rather than the current occupant of that seat.
