President Reagan was quoted as saying that Mexican officials showed extraordinary toughness in proposing programs to overcome their nations severe economic problems. The Mexico City newspaper Excelsior quoted Reagan as saying that Mexico’s recent agreement with the International Monetary Fund on a financial rescue package “is an equitable agreement that will permit Mexico to grow and satisfy its financial obligations.” The interview, conducted in Washington, was published days after President Miguel de la Madrid visited Washington to meet Reagan and other top officials.
