Carlton Gary was convicted of the stocking stranglings of three elderly women during a reign of terror that spanned eight months. The jury in Columbus, Ga., deliberated an hour before convicting Gary of raping and murdering the three women in a period between September, 1977, and April, 1978. The attacks terrorized elderly women in Columbus. The state said it will seek the death penalty.
