Former Gov. Henry L. Bellmon won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Oklahoma’s primary, and Rep. James R. Jones captured the Democratic nomination to oppose first-term Sen. Don Nickles. In the Democratic primary for governor, businessman David Walters held the lead but appeared headed for a Sept. 16 runoff with Atty. Gen. Mike Turpen. In Alaska, Gov. Bill Sheffield faced a stiff Democratic primary challenge, and former Gov. Walter J. Hickel was making a comeback bid in a crowded Republican field.
