“Here is a recipe handed down from my mother from about 60 years ago,” J. Bilzerian writes.
IMITATION BAKLAVA
1 1/2 cups butter or margarine
1 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
4 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup plus 5 teaspoons sugar
3/4 cup honey
3/4 cup water
1 teaspoon lemon juice
Melt butter in saucepan with milk. Cool. Stir in eggs. Sift together flour, salt and baking powder three times. Add to egg mixture. Beat well. Mix nuts, cinnamon and 5 teaspoons sugar together. Add to mixture. Spread on greased (13x9-inch) baking dish. Bake at 375 degrees 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking 20 to 30 minutes longer. Remove from oven and cut in diamond shapes while hot.
Boil remaining 1 cup sugar, honey, water and lemon juice 5 minutes. Cool. Pour over cake and serve. Makes about 12 servings.
