No Surprises Are Expected for Weekend’s Cooler Weather

The surprise in the weekend weather forecast is that there are no surprises, as the pattern of slightly below-average temperatures and hazy afternoon sunshine continues.
“Usually September brings us surprises,” National Weather Service forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. “We’re always on the lookout during this month for hurricanes off the coast of Mexico, which affect our surf, as well as thunderstorms in the mountains and deserts. But we don’t expect any of these surprises over the weekend.”
The surf will be one to two feet, quite a difference from last weekend’s occasional eight-foot breakers.
“The surf is small, but it can get fairly large in September,” Shigehara said. “This is because we have to look all the way to Central America to find any storm activity, and we usually can find some this time of year in southern Mexico.”
Temperatures will drop slightly as the weekend progresses. The high at Lindbergh Field on Thursday was 74 degrees, three degrees lower than the average temperature for that date.
“There will be a slight cooling trend in all areas over the weekend,” Shigehara said. “The warming trend we’ve been looking for will peak Friday, but it really wasn’t much of one anyway. We definitely won’t get the hot temperatures that occasionally come in September.”
Highs at the beaches will range between 69 and 73 today, and 68 to 72 Saturday. Ocean temperature, which reached 71 degrees at the beginning of the week, will cool to 67 over the weekend.
“As we go through the weekend, the sun will shine less and less, and the clouds might linger for more of a time,” Shigehara said. “For all the kids going back to school, it might not be the best beach farewell weekend.”
Temperatures in the inland valleys will reach 78 to 88 today, and decrease a degree or two by Sunday. Overnight lows will be 58 to 63.
Mountains and deserts will be clear, with little or no chance of thunderstorms throughout the weekend. Mountains will have highs of 80 to 86 today, decreasing to 78 to 84 by Saturday. Overnight lows will be a cool 47 to 57 degrees.
Desert high temperatures should reach 108 to 112 today, and 105 to 110 Saturday and Sunday. Lows will be 72 to 77.
“We’re looking at a fair weekend for all areas, not very good, but not very bad either,” Shigehara said. “It’s kind of going to be a mixed bag, with some clouds, some sunshine, but no surprises.”
