Metro Conference Approves Tournament Move

ATLANTA — The Metro Conference has approved a request by athletic officials at South Carolina that the conference’s 1987 basketball tournament be played somewhere besides Columbia.
South Carolina apparently did not want to be the host of the tournament because of an NCAA investigation into its basketball program.
The South Carolina officials “aren’t convinced probation will result from the investigation,” said Craig Thompson, assistant commissioner of the Metro Conference. “But based on the preliminary investigation and attendance, they just didn’t feel this is the right time. And the conference executive committee agreed.”
Thompson said a new site has not yet been chosen, but he acknowledge it might be in Louisville, home of the defending NCAA champions.
