JERUSALEM — The Rev. John S. Grauel, 68, the American Methodist minister who was the only Gentile crewman aboard the famed refugee ship Exodus, has been buried here.
Grauel died earlier this month in New York. He had asked to be buried in Jerusalem.
A supporter of the Zionist movement, he joined the crew of the weather-beaten Exodus, which in 1947 tried to ferry 4,500 Jews, most of them survivors of the Nazi Holocaust, to the Holy Land.
The ship made international headlines when the British intercepted it and interned its passengers and crew, including Grauel.
Later, as a member of the American Christian Palestine Committee, he lectured widely in the United States.
