Hit by Car Sept. 9 in S.D. : Ex-Wife of Comic Dick Smothers Dies

Linda Smothers, ex-wife of comedian Dick Smothers, died Friday night in Mercy Hospital of injuries she received Sept. 9 when she was struck by a car.
Hospital spokesman Norman Greene said Saturday that the family had asked that the death not be made public until Saturday because Smothers reportedly was being remarried at the time of his ex-wife’s death.
The 48-year-old woman had been in a coma since she was brought to the hospital Sept. 9, suffering from multiple fractures and internal injuries. San Diego police said she was struck by a car while crossing a street in a marked crosswalk.
Greene said that Smothers was ruled brain dead and, at the request of her family, the hospital had disconnected life support systems.
He added that Dick Smothers had called the hospital frequently to check on his ex-wife’s condition.
According to police, the woman had moved to San Diego from Los Angeles only one day before the accident. The accident is still under investigation, police said.
