Delegates of South Africa’s 800,000-member, mixed-race Dutch Reformed Church elected the Rev. Alan Boesak as president over incumbent Rev. Izak Mentor. Boesak, president of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, has been accused of subversion by South Africa’s government. During the synod in Cape Town, a motion was introduced proposing that Boesak cease his anti-apartheid activities or give up the church. Mentor, acting as chairman, said he agreed with the motion but ruled it unacceptable. Boesak said, “It is necessary for the church . . . to speak with a clear voice.”
